Accra: Legendary Ghanaian actor Adjetey Anang has issued a passionate call for African creatives to unite and reclaim ownership of their stories, warning that the continent risks losing its cultural identity to foreign media interests. Speaking in an interview with TV3, the celebrated actor expressed concern over what he described as a troubling trend of Hollywood studios mining African stories and repackaging them for global audiences.
According to Ghana Web, Anang, one of Ghana’s most iconic screen personalities, urged industry players across the continent to prioritize collaboration as a strategic response to the challenge. “There are so many stories that we’re not telling and the likes of Hollywood are coming into this space and fishing out what our stories are and retelling them in their own way and selling them back to us. There’s something wrong there,” he said.
Anang emphasized the importance of collaboration and partnership, stating, “I believe strongly that we should put our hearts together. Collaboration and partnership are very key.” He further stressed that such partnerships must be sustained rather than short-lived, to ensure a continuous projection of African culture through various creative avenues.
“We should ensure that those partnerships are ongoing so that we can, in every aspect of our creative space, project who we are and our culture, through our music, our food, and our language,” he concluded.
