Adeiso DED appeals for furniture for schools

Adeiso (E/R) March 8, GNA – Madam Rose Yaa Akani, Upper West Akim District Education Director (DED), has appealed to the District Assembly to provide more furniture for some schools in the area that are in critical need to help create conducive environment for teaching and learning.

“Despite intervention by the Assembly, we still need more”, she stated.

She said the schools in dire need of furniture include, Kwasi Nyarko Presby, Krodua D/A, Asuakwa Methodist A and B, Ndoda D/A and Adeiso Methodist A and B, Primary.

Mrs Yaa Akani made the appeal in an address she delivered at a parade to mark the 65th Independence Anniversary celebration in the district, at Adeiso.

The event under the theme “Working together; Bouncing back together “, was attended by 27 school contingents and other civil society organisations who marched past the flag of Ghana, reassuring their readiness to take over the mantle from the aged generation.

Mr Eugene Sackey, the District Chief Executive, the District Police Commander and Education Director took the salute.

Mrs Akani further stated that about 200 teachers were needed to fill vacancies in Basic Schools, but 60 teachers were posted to the district this year, leaving a deficit of about 120 and emphasised the need for the remaining number to be posted.

The theme for the celebration, she indicated, was laudable because more needed to be done for schools and all other sectors, to bounce back.

Mrs Akani noted that the government through the Assembly provided classroom blocks and other educational infrastructure in the district but more must be done to bridge the staggering logistical deficits in some schools.

“When I assumed duty in 2018, six schools in the district were scoring zero percent in the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE), but through collective efforts of the Assembly, Staff, Parents Teachers Association (PTA), only one school is left,” she stated.

She announced that, with some interventions in place, included organisation of Science practical BECE summit and Common Mock Examinations for the Junior High School students and support from the School Management Committees, the 2021 results were likely to be better.

“It is our prayer that, we will work together to bounce back together as a District’, she added.

Mr Sackey, the District Chief Executive, earlier in his address, informed the gathering that, before the COVID-19 pandemic, there was a good trajectory for development and growth of the country.

He said in all that President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo assured that the economy will be revived anytime but the safety and health of the people was paramount hence, he ensured prudent measures to safeguard public health in the heat of the pandemic

“It is true that a lot has been done afterwards to revive the economy and with regard, the government needed commendation,” he stated.

On education, he said, the education sector had improved with better BECE and WASSCE performances, adding that 65 percent passed in eight subjects raising high the flag of the district, he stated.

According to him, there was conscious efforts to improve the human capital of the area, hence the measures to upgrade education standards.

He assured that the Assembly in collaboration with Member of Parliament for the area, will continue to work harder towards the total development and growth of the district and expressed the need for all and sundry to also be committed to help bounce back together.
