Accra:The National Sports Authority has reportedly rented out the Accra Sports Stadium for a church event, raising concerns about the protection of the playing surface, which is Ghana's only stadium currently approved by the Confederation of African Football (CAF).
According to Ghana Web, an online video showing preparations for the event has sparked worries about the pitch's condition. This comes ahead of next month's 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Somalia, with fears that the event could damage the playing field.
A large congregation on the field without adequate measures could harm the grass due to foot traffic, temporary structures, and other activities related to the event. If the stadium fails to meet CAF standards during inspections, Ghana may face challenges in using it for international matches.
In 2024, Ghana had to find alternative venues after the CAF banned both Baba Yara Stadium in Kumasi and the Accra Sports Stadium from hosting international matches due to their poor conditions. The current extent of any potential damage remains uncertain, and the video does not confirm whether the playing surface has already been affected.
