Accra: The Chancery of the Accra Reset, an African health and economic sovereignty initiative led by President John Dramani Mahama, has revealed the formation of a high-level panel focused on the Reform of the Global Health Architecture and Governance.
According to Ghana News Agency, Mr. Felix Kwakye Ofosu, the Presidential Spokesman and Minister of State in-charge of Government Communications, stated that the 18-member panel will be co-chaired by Peter Piot, El Had As Sy, Nisia Trinidade, and Budi Gunadi Sadikin. The panel's mandate is to develop actionable proposals for restructuring the global health order, allowing governments of the Global South to play an active role and establish rules that reflect their sovereignty.
The panel's efforts will be supported by a High-Level Consultative Group that will facilitate structured engagement with key global health organizations including the World Health Organization (WHO), the World Trade Organization (WTO), the Global Fund, Africa CDC, African Union Development Agency (AUDA-NEPAD), and the International Finance Corporation.
The panel is set to begin its work immediately, with their terms of reference to be ratified and developed with input from the World Health Assembly, the UN General Assembly, and other significant bodies. Mr. Michel Sidibe, a former Executive Director of UNAIDS and former Minister of Health of Mali, has been appointed as Special Advisor to the High Panel and Envoy of the co-Chairs. His extensive experience with the global health architecture will be an asset to the panel's objectives.
