Accra International Airport Wins Prestigious Awards at Global Summit

Istanbul: Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL) has won two awards at the 8th Airports Council International (ACI) World Airport Experience Summit held in Istanbul, Turkey. The summit, which brought together airport industry leaders from across the world, took place from August 31 to September 4, 2026.

According to Ghana Web, Accra International Airport (AIA) received the Best Airport at Departures - Africa award in the 2-5 million passengers category. Additionally, the airport was recognized with the Customer Experience Accredited Airport - Level 1 recognition. Yvonne Nana Afriyie Opare, the Managing Director of GACL, described the awards as an honour and stated that they reflected the collective efforts of staff and stakeholders within the airport ecosystem.

Opare expressed gratitude, saying, "It is an honour and a privilege for Ghana to receive this global recognition. These awards could not have been won working independently. It is a result of teamwork and collaboration across multiple stakeholders in the airport ecosystem." She also congratulated the staff of Accra International Airport and encouraged them to continue improving service delivery. "These awards are not the end of the journey but a reminder that we must continue to raise the bar," she added.

The summit, themed 'Airport Experience: The New Era,' focused on the evolution of human-centred travel, including hospitality, organisational culture, and customer service. More than 100 airports were recognised during the summit's Gala and Awards Ceremony for their performance in customer experience.

The ACI World Airport Customer Experience Accreditation Programme assesses airports' capacity to manage and improve customer experience through stakeholder and employee engagement, training, and staff development. The ACI Airport Service Quality Programme is also recognised as a leading global benchmark for measuring airport passenger satisfaction. GACL mentioned that the latest recognitions reaffirm its commitment to service excellence and continuous improvement in the passenger experience at Accra International Airport.
