Accra Flooding Criticized as Political Cowardice by Dr Asah-Asante

Accra: Political science lecturer Dr. Kwame Asah-Asante has criticized Ghana's persistent flooding issues, attributing the crisis to political cowardice motivated by fears of losing votes. Speaking on JoyNews' AM Show, Dr. Asah-Asante highlighted the perennial flooding in Accra and the Weija Dam spillage, accusing political leaders of neglecting to enforce laws against illegal construction near waterways and dams.

According to Ghana Web, Dr. Asah-Asante emphasized that numerous structures should not have been permitted in vulnerable areas, but political interference has undermined law enforcement. He noted that politicians often intervene to prevent the enforcement of regulations, leading to a weakened response to the problem.

Dr. Asah-Asante argued that authorities are well aware of the necessary actions but are deterred by the fear of public backlash, preventing governments from taking decisive measures. He posed the critical question of when leaders will finally take a firm stand against the issue.

He cautioned that without decisive action, flooding and destruction will continue to be an annual challenge in Ghana. Dr. Asah-Asante described the recurring situation as an "annual ritual" that successive governments have failed to address effectively over the years.
