Accra Court Delays Ruling on Wontumi’s Bail Application Until November

Accra:The Accra High Court has postponed its decision on the bail application filed by Bernard Antwi Boasiako, also known as Wontumi, the former Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP). The ruling is now set for November 4, 2026. Wontumi is seeking release from custody while appealing his conviction and 20-year prison sentence for offences related to illegal mining at a concession in Samreboi, Western Region.

According to Ghana Web, the initial hearing for the bail application was scheduled for August 19, 2026, but was delayed when Wontumi and his lead counsel, Samuel Atta Akyea, did not appear in court. The hearing was later rescheduled for October 15, 2026. The Attorney General has opposed the bail application, citing the risk that Wontumi might flee if released.

Wontumi's lawyer, Samuel Atta Akyea, argued that his client should be granted bail to assist in handling other legal cases against him. He contended that Wontumi is not responsible for the actions of an authorised person who conducted reclamation work, labeling the individual as an accomplice.

Atta Akyea expressed confidence in the strength of the bail application, urging the judge to consider the circumstances and allow Wontumi to remain free during the appeal process. He assured that Wontumi would return to custody if his appeal fails, underscoring that the law supports his client's position for bail.
