Accra: Founder of A and C Mall, Dr Andrew Kwaku Asamoah, has revealed the dismissal of his driver of 17 years after discovering a fuel procurement fraud during his three-month stay in Geneva.
According to Ghana Web, Dr Asamoah's suspicions were aroused after he reviewed the monthly fuel bills and noticed that the purchases remained consistent despite his absence from the country. In an interview with Kofi Dey on YouTube, Dr Asamoah recounted, "I travelled to Geneva for three months. When I came back, I saw that the bill was much and the figures were strange. How can you be buying the same amount of fuel when I wasn't even here?"
Upon questioning, the driver explained that the fuel was used to 'warm up' the vehicles while they were parked. However, Dr Asamoah found this explanation unconvincing, noting that such activity could not account for the high fuel claims amounting to thousands of cedis monthly.
Further investigation revealed that the driver had been approving fuel vouchers himself, bypassing the required supervisor authorization. Dr Asamoah alleged that the fraudulent scheme involved inflating fuel claims, whereby the driver would purchase fuel worth GHS200 but record GHS1,000 on the voucher, subsequently sharing the difference.
Despite appeals from the driver and his family to reconsider, Dr Asamoah stood firm and dismissed the driver immediately after uncovering the fraud.
