Accra: Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa has announced a special bonus package for the staff of the Passport Administration, recognizing their exemplary performance as highlighted in a recent report by the Ghana Statistical Service (GSS). The institution was acknowledged as the least corrupt and most transformed public institution, prompting the minister's commendation during his visit to the Passport Head Office on August 15, 2026.
According to Ghana Web, Ablakwa praised the efforts of the management and staff for their hard work and the significant improvements made in passport services. He stated that all staff members would receive a special bonus in the coming week as a token of appreciation for their contributions. The minister emphasized the government's commitment to implementing 'radical reforms' focusing on integrity, professionalism, and innovation to enhance public service.
Ablakwa highlighted the advancements achieved under the 'Passport Reset' initiative, including the issuance of chip-embedded passports with enhanced security features and the elimination of application backlogs through 24-hour operations. These changes have resulted in most passports being processed within a few working days, generally under 15 days, without the need for intermediaries.
He further announced a reduction in passport processing fees by 30 percent and the introduction of complimentary courier services to expedite delivery. Other reforms include same-day processing, digital application tracking, and stronger security measures to prevent unlawful issuance of Ghanaian passports to foreigners.
For the first time, Passport Application Centres have been established in all 16 regions of Ghana, marking a significant milestone in the nation's passport administration. Ablakwa reiterated that the overarching goal of these reforms is to provide Ghanaians with efficient, accessible, and secure passport services that uphold the integrity of the Ghanaian passport.
