Abena Serwaa Clarifies Payment Expectations for Gospel Performances

ACCRA: Renowned Ghanaian gospel musician Abena Serwaa Ophelia has addressed misconceptions surrounding her performance fees, asserting that she does indeed charge for her shows, even in church settings. The “Maseda Dwom” singer emphasized her willingness to offer reduced rates for close associates or those in genuine financial need, but dismissed the notion of performing for free.

According to Ghana Web, the gospel artist, during an interview with Kingdom FM, stated, “It’s not true that I don’t charge for my shows. I do charge for shows I am booked to perform at.” She further explained that she might consider fee reductions for individuals with whom she has a personal relationship or who present compelling budgetary constraints. “If I come to the church and see that you genuinely cannot afford my prices, I would reduce it,” she added.

Abena Serwaa also highlighted the impracticality of expecting her and her team to perform without compensation, underscoring that even church events should not be exempt from
professional financial agreements. “But I beg, I can’t come and perform for you for free. It would be unfair. How can you look at me and my crew and say because I am doing the work of God, I should perform for free?” she queried, pointing out that even pastors would find it challenging to dismiss her without payment.

The issue of whether gospel artists should charge for their performances continues to spark debate within the industry. Some artists, such as McAbraham and Amy Newman, oppose charging for gospel ministrations, while others, including Ohemaa Mercy, Broda Sammy, and Diana Hamilton, support the practice.
