Accra: Ghanaian media personality Abena Moet has argued that women are under no obligation to disclose their salaries or enter marriage with financial assets, insisting that a woman’s contribution to marriage extends beyond money.
According to Ghana Web, Abena Moet, during an appearance on GHOne TV, highlighted traditional expectations that did not require women to bring wealth into a marriage. She explained that their primary role historically was to build and nurture a family. “It is today that education and civilization have brought change. Ideally, I am not expected to come into the marriage with anything. I am not supposed to go into marriage with a cent. I don’t have to bring money or property. I am supposed to come as I am,” she stated.
Abena Moet further elaborated on the differing social expectations for boys and girls. She noted that while boys were often encouraged to pursue opportunities outside the home, girls were traditionally taught domestic responsibilities such as cooking, cleaning, and caring for a household. According to her, a woman’s ability to bear children and create a family constitutes a significant contribution to a marriage.
She passionately argued, “I brought my womb, my body, and my ability to create life. That is why I brought everything to the table. So, with all my education, I have dropped it to come and have your kids, to continue your line for you. I came with everything that enables us to build a family.”
Abena Moet concluded her remarks by emphasizing that, based on these beliefs, a woman is not required to reveal her earnings to her husband, stating, “I am not obliged to tell you my salary.” Her comments have sparked widespread discussions on social media, with many netizens debating financial transparency, gender roles, and shared responsibilities within marriage.
