GWJN Urges Halt on Water Privatisation Initiatives Amid Concerns Over Desalination Project

Accra:The Ghana Water Justice Network (GWJN) has raised significant concerns regarding the financial implications of the Teshie-Nungua Desalination Project. The network has urged the government to pause further water privatisation initiatives until a thorough review of water-sector Public-Private Partnerships (PPPs) is conducted.

According to Ghana News Agency, the GWJN emphasized that the Teshie-Nungua Desalination Project exemplifies the risks associated with arrangements that expose the state and water consumers to substantial financial liabilities without providing equivalent public benefits. The network's call was made in a joint statement during a press conference organized by several advocacy groups, including the Integrated Social Development Centre (ISODEC) and Revenue Mobilisation Africa (RMA).

The press conference, themed 'Reclaiming Africa's Water Future Public Water for All,' focused on issues surrounding the Teshie-Nungua Desalination Plant. It was part of the Africa Week of Action Against Water Privatisation 2026, a campaign supported by Corporate Accountability and Public Participation Africa (CAPPA), which urges African governments to resist water privatisation.

The statement highlighted concerns over the quality and financial burden of water from the Teshie-Nungua plant, urging the government to ensure that flawed contracts do not lead to increased water tariffs for households. It also called for an independent policy review and public disclosure of relevant agreements and findings.

Moreover, the GWJN urged the government to prioritize public investment and accountable management of Ghana Water, emphasizing the need for universal water accessibility and affordability as fundamental human rights. The recent arbitration tribunal ruling, which awarded approximately US$235 million in termination-related payments, underscores the importance of re-evaluating water-sector agreements and safeguarding public interest.
