Accra:The identity of the TikTok account known as GhanaJollof became a central topic in September 2026 following the arrest of Salomey Awiti Bafoh, a senior nursing officer from Techiman. Bafoh, alleged to be an associate of the controversial TikToker, faced prosecution amid allegations of disseminating inciteful content linked to the account.
According to Ghana Fact, the Ghana Police Service issued a wanted notice for 40-year-old Barbara Asantewaa Kodua, known as GhanaJollof, suspecting her of hiding in the UK and inciting violence. On September 18, 2026, the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) accused Kodua of using her platform to spread false information about a coup at Jubilee House. The CID also alleged that Bafoh acted as a local liaison for distributing the content.
The police actions have sparked discussions on free speech, coinciding with recent arrests of individuals critical of the First Family on social media. This situation has also led to the spread of misinformation and false narratives, particularly on social media platforms.
One instance of misinformation involved a fake obituary poster circulated on Facebook and X, claiming Kodua had died and was buried in Ghana in 2023. AI-detection software confirmed the poster was artificially generated. Another false narrative involved a video of First Lady Lordina Mahama, misleadingly captioned as a response to Kodua, which was traced back to a 2025 event unrelated to the current events.
The timeline of Bafoh's legal proceedings includes her arrest on September 16, 2026, her arraignment and denial of bail, and subsequent legal actions, culminating in her being granted bail on October 5, 2026, with the case adjourned to February 17, 2026.
