KNUST and Lands Ministry Plan Satellite Campus in Nzema to Honor Nkrumah

Ellembelle:Accra The Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) is making strides towards establishing a satellite campus in Ellembelle, located in the Nzema area of the Western Region, to honor Ghana's first President, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah. This initiative is part of a significant collaboration between KNUST and the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources.

According to Ghana Web, the proposal for the new campus arose from discussions between KNUST's Vice Chancellor, Professor Christian Agyare, and the Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah. The Member of Parliament for Ellembelle, during one of his regular visits to the university, expressed support for the engineering department with a donation of a Fintech laboratory.

The visit, which took place on Tuesday, November 3, 2026, aims to enhance educational opportunities and strengthen KNUST's presence in the oil and gas-rich enclave of Nzema. The satellite campus is envisioned as a tribute to Dr. Nkrumah's legacy, emphasizing education as a means for national transformation.

Discussions between the university and the ministry have identified strategic areas for collaboration, including academic research, scientific innovation, and technological advancement, particularly in natural resource management. Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Mining Engineering were highlighted as key focus areas, with the aim of leveraging technology to improve efficiency and decision-making in the sector.

The partnership also plans to explore the use of financial technology (FinTech) to enhance transparency and accountability in resource governance. This collaboration is timely as Ghana intensifies efforts to protect the environment from illegal mining and deforestation.

KNUST's involvement is expected to bolster the Ministry's policies through research, innovation, and specialized expertise. The proposed satellite campus could become a hub for academic development and research, offering educational opportunities to young people in the Western Region and potentially neighboring French West African countries.

This initiative underscores the importance of partnerships between government and academic institutions in addressing Ghana's development priorities, particularly in mining, technology, and sustainable resource management. The Ellembelle campus represents an opportunity to connect Dr. Nkrumah's educational legacy with modern scientific innovation for sustainable development.
