Accra:An advocate and recovering addict, Kweku Gardener, currently undergoing rehabilitation at the Chosen Rehab Centre, has alleged that inmates in Ghanaian prisons can easily be poisoned.
According to Ghana Web, Gardener, who has been in and out of prison, made these comments while responding to claims by Palgrave Boakye-Danquah, special aide to Bernard Antwi Boasiako, regarding a plot to poison the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party.
Gardener revealed during an appearance on Frontline on Rainbow Radio 87.5FM that he personally witnessed inmates die after consuming poisoned light soup intended for another inmate. He explained that prison officers are aware of the possibility of such incidents occurring. Despite acknowledging that some inmates might fabricate claims to get transferred, he insisted that the threat of poisoning is real.
He recounted an incident involving an inmate nicknamed Tobinco, whose friends consumed a light soup meant for him and subsequently died. Gardener also mentioned that Tobinco faced multiple attempts on his life due to his demeanor in the prison. Gardener himself claimed to have survived similar attempts.
Meanwhile, the Ghana Prisons Service is investigating an alleged plot to assassinate Bernard Antwi-Boasiako, known as "Chairman Wontumi." Dr. Palgrave Boakye-Danquah reported the threat, stating that Antwi-Boasiako informed him of the plot during a court appearance. Chief Superintendent of Prisons Abdul Latif Adamu confirmed the investigation and expressed disappointment over the public handling of the incident.
