Parents Urged to Prioritize Children’s Eye Health and Limit Screen Time

Accra:Dr. Gladys Fordjour, Consultant Ophthalmologist at the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital, has emphasized the critical importance of prioritizing children’s eye health. She encourages parents and caregivers to foster healthy visual habits to prevent vision problems that may adversely impact their education and development.

According to Ghana News Agency, Dr. Fordjour highlighted that undetected eye conditions could hinder children's academic performance by affecting their ability to read, write, and engage in classroom activities. As President of the Ophthalmological Society of Ghana, she advises parents to ensure proper lighting when children are reading or doing homework, to prevent eye strain and associated discomfort.

Dr. Fordjour further recommends professional eye examinations for children exhibiting signs such as frequent eye rubbing, squinting, or difficulty reading classroom boards. Early diagnosis and treatment can mitigate potential learning disruptions. She also underscores the need for parents and teachers to monitor children's digital device usage, cautioning that excessive screen time can lead to eye strain and developmental issues.

She urges the public to integrate regular eye care into children’s healthcare routines to avoid significant vision impairments. Schools can play a role by promoting eye-health education and ensuring proper classroom lighting. Dr. Fordjour concludes by stressing the significance of early intervention and regular eye check-ups to support children in maintaining good vision and effectively participating in educational and daily activities.
