Accra:The National Commission on Culture (NCC) has revealed plans to offer a culturally rich Christmas experience for both Ghanaians and visitors, as part of its efforts to promote Ghana's cultural heritage. The event, named Black Star Christmas, will take place at the Afua Sutherland Children’s Park in Accra from December 23 to 24, 2026.
According to Ghana Web, the initiative is inspired by President John Dramani Mahama’s Black Star Experience programme. Wakefield Wisdom Ackuaku, Executive Director of the NCC, emphasized the goal of centering Ghanaian culture in the nation’s Christmas celebrations, moving beyond contemporary festivities that target specific demographics.
Ackuaku explained that the Black Star Christmas aims to create lasting cultural memories for visitors, rather than just experiences of food and entertainment. Entry to the event will be free, ensuring inclusivity, though attendees will need to purchase coupons for food, drinks, and activities through a cashless system.
One of the event's highlights will be a dedicated kids’ zone featuring traditional Ghanaian games like tug-of-war, pilolo, tumantu, and ampe, offering children a chance to connect with cultural practices that are becoming less familiar.
The NCC plans to potentially expand the event nationwide, utilizing its district cultural offices and regional directorates. The future of the Black Star Christmas in other regions will depend on the success and reception of the inaugural event in Accra.
