Ashanti Regional Minister Urges MMDAs to Focus on Development in Upcoming Budgets

Kumasi:Dr. Frank Amoakohene, the Ashanti Regional Minister, has urged the Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies (MMDAs) to design realistic, transparent, and development-focused budgets for the 2027-2030 medium-term planning period. This directive was given during the MMDAs Composite Budget Hearings at the Regional Coordinating Council conference hall in Kumasi.

According to Ghana News Agency, Dr. Amoakohene emphasized the importance of prioritizing the completion of ongoing developmental projects. He advised MMDAs to enhance their internal revenue generation mechanisms and to allocate at least 20 percent of their total Internally Generated Funds (IGF) directly towards capital development projects that provide immediate, tangible benefits to local citizens.

Dr. Amoakohene, whose address was delivered by Mr. Michael Owusu Amoako, the Regional Coordinating Director, stressed the necessity for absolute financial accountability and prudent management of public resources. He highlighted the need for strict adherence to national procurement regulations to prevent waste and ensure value for money. All participating MMDAs are expected to submit their approved composite budgets to the Ministry of Finance by the deadline of November 04, 2026.

Dr. Alex Amankwah-Poku, Director for Public Financial Management Systems at the Ministry of Finance, noted that the annual budget hearing exercise aligns with legal mandates and aims to enhance prudent financial management practices and discipline at the local government level.
