Sunyani:Road crashes in the Bono Region have resulted in the deaths of 50 individuals from January to September 2026, as reported by Madam Abigail Atinkopa, the Bono Regional Head of the National Road Safety Authority.
According to Ghana News Agency, while the number of road crashes has decreased, the rate of fatalities remains unacceptably high. In the same period last year, 56 people died in 124 crashes involving 125 vehicles, with 125 individuals injured. This year, 75 crashes were recorded, involving 114 vehicles and injuring 43 persons.
Madam Atinkopa emphasized the need for collective efforts to reduce road crashes and fatalities in the region and across the country. She praised the Traffitech Ghana initiative and the amended Road Safety Regulations (LI2180), suggesting their effective implementation could significantly lower road incidents.
The government plans to enforce the Traffitech-GH system and new road safety regulations starting November 1, 2026. This automated system, developed by the Ghana Police Service, aims to improve road safety by using cameras and sensors to capture traffic violations like speeding and running red lights.
Traffitech-GH employs various devices to record offences, with evidence being sent to a back office for validation. Offenders are notified via SMS for penalty payments. Additionally, the amended regulations focus on managing broken-down vehicles on roads to prevent hazards.
To ensure successful implementation, the NRSA has increased public education about Traffitech-GH and the new regulations. Madam Atinkopa called for stakeholder support, asserting that enhancing road safety is a shared responsibility.
