Ghana and Burkina Faso Pursue Enhanced Petroleum Trade Cooperation

Accra:The National Petroleum Authority (NPA) of Ghana has reaffirmed its commitment to expanding petroleum trade with Burkina Faso, focusing on increasing the supply and transportation of refined petroleum products to the landlocked neighboring country.

According to Ghana Web, this development was highlighted during a meeting between Godwin Kudzo Tameklo, Esq., Chief Executive of the NPA, and Forogo Patrice, the newly appointed Chief Executive Officer of Burkina Faso’s Société Nationale Burkinabè d’Hydrocarbures (SONABHY). The meeting provided an opportunity for both officials to reaffirm the longstanding bilateral relationship between Ghana and Burkina Faso in the petroleum sector and explore ways to strengthen cooperation for mutual benefit.

Tameklo expressed Ghana's interest in deepening its role as a supplier and transit point for petroleum products to Burkina Faso, noting the significant opportunities available through increased trade. He emphasized the potential for expanding bilateral petroleum commerce, particularly in trading refined petroleum products, which could bolster commercial ties and support regional energy cooperation.

Patrice acknowledged Ghana's continued partnership and support, underscoring the importance of strengthening bilateral relations, especially in petroleum financing and trade. He noted that closer cooperation between the two institutions would benefit both countries as they aim to enhance collaboration in the petroleum industry.

The engagement underscores the importance of cross-border petroleum trade to Burkina Faso, which relies on supply routes through neighboring countries to meet its fuel requirements. It also highlights the potential for stronger cooperation between petroleum sector institutions in West Africa to improve trade flows and deepen regional economic integration.

The NPA stated that the visit reinforced its commitment to fostering bilateral and regional partnerships, promoting petroleum trade, and strengthening collaboration among industry institutions across the West African sub-region. While discussions are ongoing, no specific agreements, financing arrangements, or implementation timelines were announced following the courtesy call.
