Accra:Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa has criticized the New Patriot Party (NPP) for what he describes as double standards in the ongoing debate on appointments to the Electoral Commission (EC).
According to Ghana Web, Ablakwa argued that those who defended the practice of EC appointments under previous administrations should not condemn it now merely because political power has shifted. He emphasized his previous criticisms of EC appointments when the National Democratic Congress (NDC) was in opposition and urged political figures to maintain consistent principles irrespective of which party is in power.
During an interview on Joy News, Ablakwa discussed the controversy surrounding Emelia Afi Agbenyo's appointment as Deputy Chairperson of the EC, highlighting the need for political consistency to ensure credible public debate. He praised individuals who have consistently criticized such appointments over the years, while condemning those who have reversed their stances depending on which political party is in government.
Ablakwa reiterated that his views on the appointments have not changed, stressing the importance of avoiding the appearance of political influence over the EC. He called for political parties to adhere to the same standards regarding EC appointments, regardless of whether they are in government or opposition, rather than altering their positions to serve their political interests.
