Kpebu Criticizes Mahama’s Electoral Commission Appointment

Accra:Martin Kpebu, a private legal practitioner, has raised concerns over President John Dramani Mahama's decision to appoint Emelia Afi Agbenyo to the Electoral Commission (EC). Kpebu questions why the President is making decisions that seem to contradict the change he promised to Ghanaians.

According to Ghana Web, Kpebu pointed out that Mahama's victory in the 2024 general election by approximately 1.7 million votes provided him with an opportunity to enact the reforms he had proposed under his Reset agenda. Kpebu questioned, "You won the last election by about 1.7 million votes. So why are you getting it wrong?"

Kpebu criticized the appointment as a deviation from the President's earlier commitment to resetting the country's governance, suggesting that it contradicts Mahama's previous criticisms of perceived partisanship in EC appointments. He expressed his disapproval by stating, "This one is the Reset in reverse," during an interview on JoyNews.

He further questioned the potential long-term impact of this decision on Mahama's legacy. With about two years remaining in his term, Kpebu urged the President to avoid actions that might undermine the promised change, describing the appointment as "not sustainable." He encouraged Mahama to reconsider his approach, highlighting that Ghanaians expected a departure from practices he had criticized while in opposition.
