Accra:Alhassan Suhuyini, a member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has expressed that President John Dramani Mahama could have enhanced the perception of neutrality at the Electoral Commission (EC) by opting for merit-based appointments instead of focusing on political balance.
According to Ghana Web, Suhuyini suggested that there are various strategies to ensure that appointments to the commission do not compromise public confidence. One such strategy would be selecting technocrats with the necessary expertise and qualifications.
During an appearance on Newsfile on Joy News, Suhuyini emphasized the importance of neutrality in appointments, stating that while partisan balance is permissible, a focus on technocratic and merit-based appointments could better project the EC as an impartial entity. He criticized the current approach of partisan balance, suggesting that a shift towards merit-based selections could foster greater public trust.
Suhuyini's remarks came amid criticism of Mahama's recent appointments to the commission. He acknowledged that while partisan balance is one method, appointments based on merit and professional competence are essential for improving perceptions of the commission's independence.
He also highlighted the role of future presidents in enhancing the standards of appointments, emphasizing that each administration should work towards strengthening the neutrality of the institution over time.
