Accra:The Executive Director of the Africa Centre for Security and Counterterrorism, Emmanuel Kotin, has urged Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin to resign due to extortion allegations against him. Kotin believes that stepping down would help preserve Afenyo-Markin's dignity and protect the image of the Minority caucus and the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
According to Ghana Web, Kotin argued during a discussion on GBC's Current Agenda that the mere allegation had already tarnished the reputation of the Minority caucus and the NPP. He criticized Afenyo-Markin's legal actions, describing his defamation suit as flawed and embarrassing to the party.
Kotin also suggested that if Afenyo-Markin does not resign voluntarily, the NPP leadership should force his resignation. He mentioned that his organization had reached out to party members to understand their reluctance to act, finding that there were fears of political backlash.
Despite these concerns, Kotin contended that addressing the issue promptly would better serve the party's interests. He noted that the extortion allegations had overshadowed important national discussions, including a recent World Bank report on financial losses.
The call for resignation comes in the wake of a public dispute between Afenyo-Markin and Sammy Gyamfi, CEO of the Ghana Gold Board, who accused him of extortion. Afenyo-Markin has denied the claims and filed a defamation lawsuit against Gyamfi, seeking damages and a retraction.
