Accra:A series of controversies involving the misuse of Ghana's institutional authority and travel credentials have raised significant concerns about the country's international reputation. These incidents have repeatedly involved individuals traveling abroad under the guise of sporting associations or public institutions, leading to questions about the verification of credentials and official documentation.
According to Ghana Web, the controversies span several years, including an incident in July 2009 in Australia where individuals falsely represented Ghana in a sporting event intended for deaf footballers. Further issues arose during the 2018 Commonwealth Games and, more recently, in April 2024, when a group traveled to Norway claiming to be para-athletes. The latter incident led to suspensions over alleged document falsification.
In 2026, another controversy emerged involving alleged visa-facilitation arrangements connected to the FIFA World Cup. This involved significant financial allegations and led to the suspension of Yaw Ampofo Ankrah, Director-General of the National Sports Authority, pending investigation.
These incidents have led to calls for more stringent verification processes and accountability to prevent the misuse of Ghana's name and resources. The recurring nature of these issues suggests a need for deeper institutional reforms to safeguard the country's credibility on the international stage.
