Bangkok:Ghana The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has praised Ghana's economic recovery and urged other countries to emulate its progress under the Extended Credit Facility (ECF) programme. The IMF has revised Ghana's 2026 growth forecast upwards to 5.7 percent from the previous 4.6 percent, placing the country among the ten fastest-growing economies in sub-Saharan Africa.
According to Ghana News Agency, Mr. Zeine Zeidane, Director of the IMF's African Department, commended Ghana during a meeting with Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Baah Forson on the sidelines of the 2026 IMF/World Bank Group Annual Meetings in Bangkok. He noted the success of the ECF programme and reforms that have strengthened Ghana's economic management.
Mr. Zeidane highlighted the positive impact of artificial intelligence in customs administration, which has reportedly increased monthly customs revenue by about US$100 million since its introduction in April 2026. He also praised the reforms involving state-owned enterprises, which saw total revenue rise to GHS176.43 billion in 2025, marking a 28.12 percent increase from the previous year.
Additionally, Mr. Zeidane welcomed the reduction in Ghana's debt-to-GDP ratio to 45 percent as of June 2026, attributed to stock-flow adjustments.
Finance Minister Dr. Forson reaffirmed the government's commitment to fiscal discipline and ongoing reforms. He expressed confidence that Ghana's growth would surpass the IMF's revised forecast, emphasizing plans to pursue investment and financing opportunities under the New Economy agenda aimed at value addition, industrialization, global competitiveness, and job creation.
