Steering Committee Launched for Accra Green and Clean City Initiative

Accra:The Minister of Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Mahama Ayariga, has inaugurated a steering committee to spearhead the transformation of Accra into a cleaner and greener city. The initiative aims to achieve a healthier urban environment through strategic partnerships with corporate organizations.

According to Ghana Web, the committee, which was inaugurated at the Ministry's conference room on October 15, 2026, is chaired by the Ga Mantse, King Nii Tackie Teiko Tsuru II. It includes representatives from key technical agencies, the Greater Accra Regional Coordinating Council, and various Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies.

A significant aspect of the initiative is the Adopt-a-Street/Adopt-a-Corridor Programme. This program encourages corporate entities to collaborate with the Ministry and local assemblies to maintain specific streets, road medians, roundabouts, and public spaces. Participating organizations are expected to engage in regular cleaning, landscaping, and tree planting as part of their corporate social responsibility.

Ayariga tasked the committee with developing an implementation framework, prioritizing key corridors, mobilizing corporate partners, and setting up monitoring mechanisms to evaluate progress. The ultimate goal is to foster sustainable partnerships that enhance the city’s public spaces, contributing to a cleaner, greener, and more appealing Accra.
