Ayanfuri:Perseus Mining Ghana Limited (PMGL) has conducted a free breast cancer screening for more than 450 women and students in Ayanfuri, located in the Upper Denkyira West District of the Central Region. This initiative was part of activities marking Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
According to Ghana News Agency, the exercise aimed to promote early detection, raise awareness, and encourage timely medical intervention to lessen the impact of breast cancer. The beneficiaries included women from the Ayanfuri community and students from Ayanfuri Senior High School.
Raymond Agyarko, the District Public Health Nurse for Upper Denkyira West, advised against using herbal medicines for treating suspected breast cancer, emphasizing that such delays in seeking proper medical care could have severe health implications. He highlighted the importance of early detection and professional medical assessment for effective breast cancer management.
Agyarko expressed concern over misconceptions about breast cancer, particularly the belief that herbal remedies can replace professional treatment. He noted that two out of every ten women screened in the district have been affected by breast cancer and urged women to monitor their breast health vigilantly.
Alex Kofi Oduro, General Manager of Perseus Mining Ghana Limited, affirmed the company's dedication to promoting health and well-being in its operational areas. He advocated for increased public education to help women recognize potential warning signs of breast cancer and seek medical advice promptly.
Oduro emphasized that while not every breast change indicates cancer, persistent or unusual changes should be examined by health professionals. He called for community action to replace fear and stigma with knowledge and timely medical attention. The screening initiative forms part of PMGL's ongoing efforts to support preventive healthcare and raise breast cancer awareness in its host communities.
