KATH Maternity Project Stalled Due to Payment Issues

Accra:Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital Work on the Maternity and Children's Block at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) has come to a standstill because of unpaid claims owed to the contractor.

According to Ghana Web, the Parliamentary Select Committee on Health discovered the delay during an inspection tour led by Chairman Hon. Dr Mark Kurt Nawaane. Project Manager Emmanuel Fobi Asabere reported that while physical construction is 56 percent complete, procurement efforts have reached 75 percent.

Asabere highlighted that two significant suspensions related to funding caused severe delays, increased costs, and raised concerns about equipment warranties and material integrity. Despite this, the contractor is maintaining the site, with key installations such as air-conditioning units, electrical fittings, and building façades already procured and ready for installation once work resumes.

KATH's Chief Executive Officer, Dr. (Med) Paa Kwesi Baidoo, underscored the importance of completing the facility to enhance specialized maternal and paediatric care throughout the region.

Hon. Dr Nawaane emphasized the need for urgent action from stakeholders to resolve the financial issues. He acknowledged the project's significance and the substantial progress made, including the procurement of essential materials.

The completed block is expected to serve as a major referral hub for the Ashanti Region and beyond, potentially reducing maternal and neonatal mortality rates.
