Gianni Infantino Faces Continued Pressure Over World Cup Proposal

Zurich:FIFA President Gianni Infantino has apologized to the FIFA Council regarding his contentious World Cup sell-off plan. Despite this gesture, European football officials continue to press for his resignation, highlighting ongoing leadership concerns.

According to Ghana Web, Infantino confronted his critics during a lengthy Council meeting in Zurich on October 15, 2026. The meeting followed the collapse of his proposal to sell a minority stake in FIFA's commercial operations to private investors, a plan known as FIFA Forward Enterprise (FFE), which aimed to raise $4.2 billion for global football development.

The proposal faced widespread opposition due to transparency issues and the lack of consultation with key FIFA officials before its announcement. English Football Association chair Debbie Hewitt noted that Infantino's apology did not alleviate their concerns, emphasizing the need for answers and documents related to the abandoned plan. She warned that Infantino's position might become untenable without satisfactory responses.

German Football Association president Bernd Neuendorf also voiced dissatisfaction, stressing the necessity for leadership that can restore confidence in FIFA. The controversy has deepened divisions within world football, with European leaders advocating for significant changes in FIFA's leadership and governance. Infantino, who has been at the helm of FIFA since 2016, is anticipated to seek re-election in March 2027.
