TraffiTech-GH Pilot Reduces Road Accidents and Fatalities

Accra:The pilot phase of TraffiTech-GH has shown significant progress in enhancing road safety across the country by reducing road crashes, injuries, and fatalities through the issuance of caution notices.

According to Ghana News Agency, Police Sergeant Yussif Braimah reported that road crashes decreased from 1,108 in September 2025 to 1,003 in September 2026. Similarly, injuries declined from 1,405 to 1,194, while fatalities dropped from 243 to 224 during the same period.

These improvements highlight the effectiveness of the technology-driven initiative, which aims to enhance compliance with road traffic regulations through digital monitoring and enforcement. Initially planned for full implementation in October 2026, TraffiTech-GH's complete rollout has been rescheduled to November 1, 2026, to allow for extensive public awareness and engagement with stakeholders.

In Ghana, road crashes remain a significant issue, with major causes including speeding, reckless driving, and non-compliance with traffic regulations. To combat this, the Government, alongside the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) of the Ghana Police Service and its partners, introduced TraffiTech-GH. This system leverages digital technologies such as automated speed monitoring and electronic traffic violation detection to identify traffic offenders.

During the pilot phase, offending motorists received warning notices instead of penalties to increase awareness and promote voluntary compliance with road safety regulations. Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Alexander Kwaku Obeng emphasized the need to curb preventable road crashes and noted the role of digital enforcement tools in improving road safety.

ACP Obeng further explained that under TraffiTech-GH, motorists violating traffic regulations will receive notifications and be guided through an electronic payment process for penalties. He urged motorists to adhere to speed limits and road safety regulations to maintain the improvements achieved during the pilot phase.
