Kofi Bentil Discusses Political Influence in Ghana’s Chief Justice Selection

Accra:Kofi Bentil, Vice President of IMANI Africa, has expressed concerns that political considerations may impact the selection of Ghana's next Chief Justice. He suggests that presidents are likely to choose candidates with whom they feel comfortable working.

According to Ghana Web, Bentil discussed this issue during an appearance on JoyNews' PM Express on October 14, 2026. He highlighted that political leanings often influence high-level appointments, despite the perception that Ghana's judicial officers are apolitical.

Bentil compared the situation in Ghana to that of the United States, where some judges are elected, and organized groups monitor lawyers from the early stages of their careers. He noted that in the U.S., the political dimensions of judicial appointments are openly acknowledged, unlike in Ghana, where such considerations are rarely discussed publicly.
