Afenyo-Markin Discusses Spiritual Survival in Politics

Accra:Mr. Alexander Kwamena Afenyo-Markin, the Minority Leader, emphasized the importance of friendship, forgiveness, and prayer in surviving the political landscape. He shared these reflections during a surprise visit by the Lorlornyo Haborbor Cultural Group from Akosua Village in Winneba to his residence.

According to Ghana News Agency, the event was also attended by Mr. Farouk Mahama, a former MP for Yendi, and Mr. Kwasi Bonzoh, the newly elected Western regional secretary for the New Patriotic Party (NPP). Mr. Afenyo-Markin spoke about the enduring friendship he shares with both men, highlighting a Chinua Achebe quote about the value of togetherness in political engagement.

Mr. Afenyo-Markin, who also serves as the NPP MP for Effutu, reflected on his unexpected entry into politics. Initially aspiring to a career in law and business, he was prompted to enter public service when a primary candidate for the NPP in the Effutu constituency stepped down. He described public life as a solitary journey, requiring a reliable support system.

Leadership within the NPP, he noted, involves constant challenges due to inherent disagreements in a 'party of peers.' Despite these challenges, Mr. Afenyo-Markin stressed the crucial role of prayer, stating that spiritual strength is vital for resilience in public service.
