Accra:Former Managing Director of the Precious Minerals Marketing Company (PMMC), Nana Akwasi Awuah, has defended his tenure, asserting that the company was successfully turned around by the end of 2024 before the establishment of its successor, the Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod).
According to Ghana Web, Awuah issued a statement clarifying that despite struggles, PMMC had made significant progress by the close of 2024. His remarks came in response to GoldBod's recent engagement with Parliament's Public Accounts Committee, where it was reported that PMMC's accounts for 2020 to 2024 were not audited until the new management initiated the process in 2025.
Awuah contested the notion that the audits began only after new management took over, stating he had requested an audit from the Auditor-General as early as September 2024. He attributed delays to bureaucratic processes in appointing a new external auditor, noting that the auditing work commenced in September 2024 and was completed with reports finalized in April and June 2025.
He also highlighted a performance audit in 2023, which was the first such audit at PMMC in about two decades. Awuah argued that PMMC's improvement by the end of 2024 laid a strong foundation for the formation of GoldBod, refuting claims that previous management had failed to initiate the audit process.
