Ghana Proposes $500 Million Lifeline Fund for Climate Shocks

Accra:The Minister of State for Climate Change and Sustainability, Seidu Issifu, announced plans for a proposed Lifeline Fund aiming to gather an initial $500 million. This fund is intended to assist climate-vulnerable countries in dealing with disasters and other climate-related shocks.

According to Ghana Web, Issifu discussed the initiative during the 2026 IMF/World Bank Annual Meetings in Thailand. He explained that the fund would be bolstered by contributions from strategic investors and development partners, helping countries quickly access financing for climate shocks without straining their public budgets.

The fund is expected to be led by countries in the Global South with international support. Ghana plans to take a leadership role by contributing to the fund, potentially encouraging others to participate. Issifu emphasized that countries undergoing economic adjustments should still qualify for climate finance, highlighting that managing debts should not preclude them from receiving necessary support.

The concept of the Lifeline Fund was credited to Barbados, which initiated the discussions. Stakeholders are continuing efforts to gather the proposed capital and seek additional partners.
