Bekwai:The Member of Parliament for Bekwai, Ralph Poku-Adusei, has donated GHS100,000 to the Bekwai Municipal Hospital. This contribution is aimed at initiating the procurement of essential medical equipment necessary for the hospital to maintain its new status as a secondary-level health facility.
According to Ghana Web, the donation was made during a ceremony held at the hospital on Monday, with the presence of the medical superintendent, hospital management, health professionals, constituency executives, and the media.
The hospital recently received accreditation from the Health Facilities Regulatory Agency (HeFRA) as a secondary-level health facility, enabling it to offer advanced specialist care. This development is expected to reduce patient referrals to Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital, enhance emergency response times, and improve health outcomes for Bekwai residents.
To sustain this new status, the hospital management highlighted the urgent need for upgrades in two specialist units. The Dental Unit requires new dental chairs to accommodate increasing oral health cases, while the Eye Unit needs an Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) machine for early detection and management of glaucoma and diabetic eye diseases. Without these upgrades, the hospital's ability to provide comprehensive specialist services could be compromised.
Poku-Adusei emphasized that his support aligns with his vision of a self-sufficient Bekwai, enabling residents to access healthcare locally. He reaffirmed his ongoing commitment to the hospital, referencing previous health sector initiatives such as a free eye-screening exercise in June 2026 and contributions to neonatal care.
Medical Superintendent Dr. Serebour received the donation, expressing gratitude and commitment to utilizing the funds appropriately. Hospital management noted that the elevation to secondary-level status has increased patient numbers, placing added pressure on resources, thus making the donation crucial.
Poku-Adusei also promised to collaborate with the Ministry of Health and development partners to address further equipment needs and to use his FM platform to educate the public on hospital procedures, aiming to improve patient-staff relations. The donation is expected to bolster specialist eye and dental care, minimizing the need for residents to travel for these services.
