President Mahama Inaugurates New Ward Complex at Ghana Police Hospital

Accra:President John Dramani Mahama has inaugurated an ultramodern 85-bed ward complex at the Ghana Police Hospital in Accra. This development aims to expand the hospital's capacity and improve healthcare delivery. Named the Christian Tetteh Yohuno Ward Complex, the facility increases the hospital's total bed capacity to over 200, thereby enhancing its ability to provide specialized medical services.

According to Ghana Web, the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Christian Tetteh Yohuno highlighted the significance of the project at the commissioning ceremony. He stated that the facility marks a major advancement in healthcare for police officers, emphasizing that officers' ability to protect life and property is closely tied to their physical and mental well-being.

The Ghana Police Hospital, established approximately 50 years ago, was initially intended to serve police officers and their families. Over time, it has expanded its services to the general public, especially in emergencies. The hospital treats accident victims, officers injured in the line of duty, unidentified persons, and victims of violent crimes and sexual abuse. The IGP noted that the hospital's growing responsibilities have strained its existing infrastructure, necessitating further investment.

The new complex includes separate male and female medical and surgical wards, as well as male and female paediatric wards, marking the first paediatric unit in the hospital's history. It is equipped with diagnostic tools, patient-monitoring equipment, an in-house laboratory, a pharmacy, and more. The facility also features an elevator, administrative offices, parking for 50 vehicles, and a welfare shop. These additions are designed to allow for more specialized care on-site, reducing the need for patient transfers and minimizing associated costs and inconvenience.

Additional improvements at the hospital include the renovation of the emergency area, refurbishment of the mortuary, and the introduction of electronic medical records. The IGP also announced the completion and equipping of the approximately 100-bed Tamale Police Hospital, extending healthcare investment beyond Accra. He stressed the importance of maintaining the new complex to ensure it continues to meet high standards.
