Accra:The National Sports Authority has reportedly leased the Accra Sports Stadium for a 'church programme,' raising concerns due to the lack of plans to protect the playing surface of Ghana's only CAF-approved stadium.
According to Ghana Web, an online video showing event preparations has sparked worries about the pitch's condition ahead of next month's 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Somalia.
There are fears that the event could leave the playing surface damaged. A large gathering on the field, combined with foot traffic, temporary structures, and other activities, could harm the grass if not adequately protected.
If the facility fails to meet CAF requirements during an inspection, Ghana could face challenges using the stadium for international matches. In 2024, Ghana was forced to find alternative venues after the continent's football governing body banned both the Baba Yara in Kumasi and the Accra Sports Stadia from hosting international matches due to poor conditions.
Currently, the extent of any potential damage is uncertain, and the video alone does not confirm whether the playing surface has been harmed.
