Johannesburg:The Ghana High Commission in Pretoria has issued a warning to Ghanaians living, working, or traveling in Johannesburg, Durban, and the surrounding areas in South Africa to be extra vigilant due to ongoing protests that may disrupt public movement and pose security risks.
According to Ghana Web, the advisory was issued on October 10, 2026, highlighting reports of multiple protests in the central business districts of Johannesburg and Durban. Demonstrators in Johannesburg are expected to gather at the Constitutional Court, raising concerns about potential traffic disruptions, road closures, and confrontations between protesters and law enforcement.
The High Commission has advised Ghanaian nationals to avoid protest locations, large gatherings, and areas experiencing public disturbances. It also recommended limiting non-essential travel to the central business districts and other affected areas until the situation stabilizes.
Ghanaians are urged to anticipate road closures and traffic disruptions, use alternative routes when necessary, and stay informed through local news, official traffic updates, and security advisories from the South African Police Service and relevant municipal authorities.
The advisory cautioned against engaging with protesters or participating in activities that may pose security risks. It encouraged Ghanaians to maintain regular contact with family and community leaders, especially when traveling through unrest-affected areas.
In the event of encountering threats, intimidation, or violence, Ghanaians are advised to report these to the nearest police station and notify the High Commission for consular assistance. The mission urged the community to remain calm, exercise restraint, and follow lawful instructions from South African authorities, while also warning against spreading unverified information that could incite fear or panic.
The advisory emphasized that the safety and welfare of all Ghanaian nationals in South Africa remain a top priority for the High Commission.
