Bangkok:Cape Verde Confederation of African Football (CAF) president Patrice Motsepe has announced that his current tenure will be his last, emphasizing the importance of establishing a solid foundation for the future of African football.
According to Ghana Web, Motsepe made this declaration during a press conference at the CAF Strategy Conference in Cape Verde. The event is focused on discussing the development priorities and long-term direction for football on the continent.
Motsepe highlighted the need for sustainable structures to support the progress of African football beyond his leadership, aiming to strengthen the game for upcoming generations. He was initially elected CAF president on 12 March 2021 after other candidates withdrew from the election. He secured a second term unopposed on 12 March 2025 during CAF's 14th Extraordinary General Assembly.
His recent comments reiterate his intention not to extend his presidency beyond the current term, with a focus on the legacy his administration hopes to establish. Since taking office, Motsepe has aimed to enhance African football through stronger competitions, increased support for member associations, and improved development opportunities for players and national teams.
Motsepe has also urged African football authorities to review past shortcomings and existing policies to prepare for the 2030 FIFA World Cup. One of CAF's major goals is for an African nation to win the World Cup, a feat yet to be achieved.
The strategy conference in Cape Verde offers a platform for stakeholders to address challenges and discuss reforms to boost Africa's competitiveness globally. As CAF considers how to strengthen competitions and support national associations, Motsepe's confirmation of not seeking another term underscores the need for succession planning and a smooth transition when his presidency concludes.
Currently, attention is on the strategy conference outcomes and the policies that will ensure a sustainable future for African football.
