Shelter Afrique Commits to Supporting Ghana’s Housing Agenda

Accra:The Managing Director of Shelter Afrique Development Bank, Thierno-Habib Hann, has pledged the institution's support in financing and technical expertise to further Ghana's housing agenda and the government's 24-Hour Economy vision.

According to Ghana Web, Hann emphasized the necessity of strong collaboration between the public and private sectors to address Ghana's housing deficit. He made these remarks at the inaugural National Conference on Housing Finance held in Accra, which focused on innovative financing methods for Ghana's housing future.

Hann highlighted the ongoing shortage of decent and affordable homes across Africa, including Ghana, where demand continues to outpace supply. He argued that private capital alone is insufficient to tackle these challenges and stressed the importance of aligning public vision with private investment.

He also discussed the potential of Ghana's housing sector to create jobs and enhance economic value. Currently, housing contributes 3.3% to Ghana's GDP, with nearly 28% of construction inputs being imported. Hann suggested that by increasing local production of building materials, Ghana could retain more economic value and boost demand for local suppliers.

Drawing on Kenya's Affordable Housing Programme as a successful model, Hann noted its impact, with over 270,000 homes under construction and more than $6 billion invested, creating hundreds of thousands of jobs. He proposed that similar public-private partnerships could significantly benefit Ghana's housing sector.
