Accra:Ghana's Foreign Affairs Minister, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, announced the country's decision to formally apply to join the BRICS group, which consists of emerging economies. This strategic move aims to diversify Ghana's international partnerships, expand economic opportunities, and enhance cooperation with countries in the Global South.
According to Ghana Web, Ablakwa made this announcement during the official visit of India's External Affairs Minister, Dr. Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, to Ghana. India's existing membership in BRICS positions it as a crucial partner in Ghana's application process, with the Ghanaian government already seeking India's assistance and support.
The decision by Ghana's Cabinet, led by President John Dramani Mahama, reflects the country's intent to explore new economic options and strengthen its engagement in South-South cooperation. Ablakwa emphasized that Ghana's potential membership in BRICS would offer additional avenues for economic and diplomatic collaboration.
The announcement coincided with efforts by Ghana and India to deepen bilateral cooperation across various sectors such as railway development, pharmaceuticals, ICT, defense, agriculture, science, and technology. The two nations have signed Memoranda of Understanding to enhance collaboration in agriculture and science and technology.
Dr. Jaishankar expressed India's interest in expanding ties with Ghana, especially in pharmaceuticals, healthcare, mining, and digital technology. He highlighted the similarities in development challenges faced by both countries and the potential benefits of sharing knowledge and expertise.
Ghana and India have also signed agreements focused on agricultural research, training, and biodiversity. Dr. Jaishankar praised Ghana's initiatives, such as Accra Reset, Feed Ghana, and One Million Coders, which align with India's programs. He also called for stronger cooperation between the two nations at the United Nations and advocated for reforms to the UN Security Council.
During his two-day visit to Ghana, Dr. Jaishankar acknowledged Ghana's role in the African Union and ECOWAS and lauded the elevation of bilateral relations to a Comprehensive Partnership. Ablakwa expressed optimism about future engagements and the impactful agreements anticipated from this partnership.
