Accra:The Ghanaian government has confirmed its sponsorship of the 2026/27 Ghana Premier League as part of an initiative to bolster domestic football, according to Sports and Recreation Minister Kofi Iddie Adams. The financial backing aims to help Premier League clubs achieve financial sustainability and reduce dependency on state funding.
According to Ghana Web, the Ghana Premier League has been without a significant commercial title sponsor, resulting in financial constraints for clubs over recent years. The return of President John Dramani Mahama's administration in 2025 marked a renewed focus on supporting domestic football, with the government allocating resources to back the league.
Adams emphasized that the government's current funding is designed to support the Premier League until clubs can independently manage their finances. Speaking to Max TV, he stated, "Government is sponsoring it (GPL) and intends to continue to sponsor up to a point that the clubs can be on their feet."
The broader objective of the government extends beyond immediate financial assistance. Adams, who is also the Buem Member of Parliament, noted that the government is committed to developing domestic clubs and leagues. This involvement was highlighted during the launch of the broadcaster for the 2025/26 season, where Ghana Football Association president Kurt Okraku mentioned the state's commitment to the league.
For the 2026/27 season, which began in September, each of the 18 Premier League clubs received GHS1 million to help cover operational costs. The funding is intended to improve the financial stability of the clubs and support the overall development of domestic football. Adams suggested that once clubs achieve financial independence, government support might shift to other areas of football development.
