Accra:Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson announced a strategic shift in the government's economic focus towards job creation, business growth, and improved livelihoods. This new direction follows an initial emphasis on stabilizing the economy.
According to Ghana Web, Dr. Forson outlined this approach during a meeting with the leadership and members of the Trades Union Congress (TUC). He emphasized that the next phase of the government's economic agenda will more directly address conditions affecting workers, businesses, and households.
The Finance Minister explained that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) had committed in its manifesto to first stabilize the economy before taking measures to enhance economic conditions at both individual and business levels. He noted that the government now believes it is time to concentrate on creating decent jobs and expanding opportunities for Ghanaians.
Dr. Forson also stressed the importance of improving living standards, including access to decent housing, which he connected to stronger businesses, better wages, and rising household incomes. He stated that when businesses thrive and workers earn decent salaries, households are better equipped to meet their needs and enhance their living standards.
The government's broader objective is to establish a 'New Economy' that rewards work, supports business expansion, and delivers sustained income growth. Dr. Forson highlighted the need for an economy capable of generating wealth and providing workers with adequate and growing incomes to address challenges like housing and living conditions. The government's next priority is to convert economic stability into tangible improvements in employment and livelihoods.
