Kumasi:Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has expressed skepticism about the government's 24-hour economy policy, questioning its practicality for certain businesses. According to Ghana Web, Dr. Bawumia, speaking at the NPP National Delegates Conference in Kumasi, specifically highlighted market women who sell koobi (salted, dried fish), arguing that there may not be enough demand for such goods during nighttime hours. He mentioned that even members of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) find it hard to comprehend why some market activities, like selling koobi, should extend into the night. Dr. Bawumia's remarks were part of a broader critique of the Mahama administration's implementation of the 24-hour economy, which he claims has not delivered the promised employment opportunities for young people. The NDC had campaigned on a '1 job, 3 shifts and 3 people (1-3-3)' model, yet Dr. Bawumia alleged that these jobs have not materialized nearly two years into their term. He f urther contended that young graduates and artisans who supported the NDC in hopes of increased job opportunities are still waiting for these positions. Dr. Bawumia also described the government's efforts as a '24-hour demolition exercise,' criticizing the demolition of buildings for proposed 24-hour markets. In addition to these concerns, Dr. Bawumia accused the government of not delivering on several other campaign promises. He mentioned that the Women's Development Bank, intended to support market women, has not served a single client. He also criticized increased electricity tariffs, which he said burden small businesses despite promises of lower costs. On illegal mining, Dr. Bawumia claimed the NDC had failed to curb galamsey activities, and he criticized the deterioration of the Free SHS programme and the failure to meet promises on cocoa pricing and automatic postings for teachers and nurses. Dr. Bawumia credited the stability of the cedi to the Domestic Gold Purchase Programme initiated by the Bank of Ghana, which he recommended. However, he alleged that the government was incurring unprecedented losses with this programme. Despite the stated goals of the 24-hour economy policy to create jobs and stimulate growth, Dr. Bawumia's comments suggest significant skepticism regarding its effectiveness.
