Afia Pokua Criticizes EOCO Investigation into MP Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah

Accra:Ghanaian media personality Afia Pokua, also known as Vim Lady, has criticized the investigation by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) into Manhyia South MP Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah, describing it as a perceived political witch-hunt.

According to Ghana Web, Afia Pokua expressed concerns in a self-recorded video about the conduct of the investigation, suggesting it could establish a troubling precedent for future governments. She argued that the investigation's approach is embarrassing for Ghana and suggests that members of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) are being specifically targeted.

Pokua further speculated that if the NPP returns to power, they might retaliate similarly, given the current environment, which she perceives as indicative of a political witch-hunt. This comes amidst heightened scrutiny of EOCO's investigation into Baffour Awuah, who is also a senior partner at the law firm Sarkodie, Baffour Awuah and Partners.

The Manhyia South MP has been granted bail of GHS50 million with three sureties as the probe into alleged economic and organised crimes continues. He reported voluntarily to EOCO headquarters with his lawyer following an arrest warrant issued by the Accra High Court due to his earlier non-attendance for questioning.

The investigation focuses on transactions involving SIC Life Savings and Loans Company Limited, covering alleged criminal conspiracy, financial loss, money laundering, and tax-related offences. EOCO secured a warrant to search premises linked to Baffour Awuah, and investigators have searched his office and residence.

Baffour Awuah denies receiving a GHS2.2 million payment as legal fees and disputes EOCO's account of events leading to his appearance. EOCO urges the public not to rush to conclusions, emphasizing the investigation's ongoing nature and the protection of individuals' rights under the Constitution.
