Yaw Preko Opposes Demolition of Accra Sports Stadium

Accra: Former Ghana international Yaw Preko has opposed calls to demolish the Accra Sports Stadium, saying the country's most iconic football venue should be renovated rather than replaced. The stadium has come under increasing scrutiny in recent weeks, with some critics describing it as a "death trap" after a recent inspection and calling for it to be rebuilt. According to Ghana Web, Preko believes the historic venue should be preserved, comparing it to England's national stadium. "The Accra Sports Stadium is our Wembley. We can't demolish it, but we can break some places and add other things," he told reporters after the Black Stars Legends' 6-3 defeat by UMB Speed Stars at the Adjiringano Astro Turf. The former Anderlecht and Fenerbahçe forward said authorities should focus on rebuilding sections that require attention while modernising the facility instead of tearing it down completely. Despite concerns over its condition, the Accra Sports Stadium remains approved by the Confederation of African Footbal l (CAF) to host international matches as Ghana prepares for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.
