Accra: The Chamber of Petroleum Consumers (COPEC) has urged the government to enhance local fuel refining capabilities to decrease Ghana's reliance on imported petroleum products and stabilize fuel prices. COPEC's Executive Secretary, Duncan Amoah, emphasized the importance of efficient operation in local refineries to ensure the production of competitively priced fuel.
According to Ghana Web, Amoah expressed his support for the initiative to supply crude oil to local refineries during his appearance on Adom FM. He encouraged collaboration between the government and refinery operators to ensure that consumers benefit from this arrangement. "I would encourage local refineries," Amoah stated, highlighting the need for a robust local refining sector.
Amoah further pointed out that Ghana's significant dependence on imported refined petroleum products is unsustainable, especially in light of potential disruptions in global fuel supplies and prices due to geopolitical developments. He stated, "We cannot depend on the West any further," stressing the urgency of reducing Ghana's vulnerability to international market fluctuations.
He called for a comprehensive strategy that integrates reliable crude oil supply, efficient local refining, and effective government oversight. Such a strategy would enhance Ghana's energy security and mitigate the impact of global fuel market volatility.
