Accra: The father of 20-year-old Central University law student Ivan Apprey Baidoo has recounted the events surrounding his son's death in a motorcycle crash on the Accra-Tema Motorway on August 27, 2026.
According to Ghana Web, Evans Baidoo, speaking on Citi FM's EyeWitness News on September 9, 2026, detailed that Ivan left home to play football with friends at East Legon but never returned. That evening, an unknown man answered Ivan's phone when his wife called, informing the family that Ivan had been involved in an accident and had died.
The family contacted Tema General Hospital and learned that Ivan's body had been brought there. Evans Baidoo visited the hospital, where he confirmed his son's death. Ivan was still wearing the clothes he left home in, raising questions about how the hospital identified him.
The family was then directed to the Tema Community 1 Police Station and discovered that the motorcycle rider involved in the crash had survived. The rider claimed a police officer chased them on the motorway and allegedly hit the rear of the motorcycle, causing Ivan to fall while the rider survived with minor injuries. A good Samaritan transported both men to the hospital.
Later, the family followed up at the Airport Police Station, as the crash occurred outside the jurisdiction of the Tema Community 1 Police Station. Investigator Inspector Dansoa informed them that the surviving rider had been taken into custody, and CCTV footage would be reviewed to clarify the events.
Baidoo expressed frustration, stating that the investigator continuously delayed providing the CCTV footage, which was crucial for understanding the circumstances of the crash. He alleged that the police focused more on the surviving rider than on the police officer's alleged involvement in the chase.
The case was brought before the Kaneshie District Court, where the rider faced charges of careless driving and negligently causing harm, later upgraded to murder. Baidoo raised concerns over the police's interpretation of the post-mortem results, which did not explicitly state that Ivan's death resulted from an accident, conflicting with the family's understanding of the medical findings.
Additionally, the family is troubled by Ivan's missing phone and the identity of the person who initially contacted them about his death. They have petitioned the Director-General of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) to conduct a full-scale investigation into the incident.
