Cape coast: The Presbyterian Boys' Secondary School (PRESEC-Legon) has secured a place in the semi-finals of the 2026 National Science and Maths Quiz (NSMQ) after defeating the defending champions, Mfantsipim School. This victory, which took place at the University of Cape Coast (UCC), marks a significant achievement for PRESEC-Legon as they aim to reclaim the national title.
According to Ghana News Agency, the contest was held as part of the second quarter-final match-up, attracting a large crowd of enthusiastic supporters. The event was anticipated as a 'clash of the titans,' featuring the reigning champions Mfantsipim, record NSMQ winners PRESEC-Legon, and Presbyterian Senior High School, Bompata, which was making its debut at this advanced stage of the competition.
The competition was highly charged, with supporters engaging in spirited prayers, dancing, and singing to cheer on their representatives. The battle for the semi-final spot mainly unfolded between Mfantsipim and PRESEC-Legon, reminiscent of their previous encounter at the 2024 NSMQ semi-finals where Mfantsipim emerged victorious in a close tie-breaker.
PRESEC-Legon took an early lead in the opening round, which tested knowledge across various scientific disciplines, and continued to extend their advantage in subsequent rounds. They dominated the Trustur AI Speed Race and the Prudential Life Insurance NSMQ Star round, further solidifying their lead. Despite Mfantsipim's efforts to catch up, PRESEC-Legon's consistent performance ensured their victory with a final score of 56 points, compared to Mfantsipim's 39 and Bompata's 24.
In addition to securing a semi-final spot, PRESEC-Legon received numerous awards, including the Pepsodent Highest Scorer Award and the Jupay Clean Sheet Award. Mfantsipim and Bompata also received monetary awards for their performance in the riddles round.
Mr. Dzidafo Afram, Coordinator of PRESEC-Legon, expressed pride in the team's approach to the contest, emphasizing the mindset of 'justice and righteousness' rather than seeking revenge for their previous defeat by Mfantsipim. He highlighted the team's determination to progress and ultimately win the trophy, attributing their success to hard work and support from fans and alumni.
With their eyes set on securing a record ninth NSMQ title, PRESEC-Legon is poised to continue their pursuit of excellence in the upcoming semi-finals.
